The Global Observatory of STI Policy and the STI Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) indicators framework have been introduced to representatives of various organizations involved in Ghana's science, technology, and innovation (STI) ecosystem (UNESCO GO-SPIN).

In order to enable them to collect high-quality data using the Framework, they have also received training on how to measure and report on the STI M&E Framework indicators.

The Ghana Health Service, the Northern Development Authority, research institutions, and tertiary institutions were among the organizations represented at the one-day workshop in Tamale.

The Science and Technology Policy Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-STEPRI), in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, organized the workshop as a component of the "Strengthening STI Systems for Sustainable Development in Africa" project.

The goal of the project was to make sure that governments and national science institutions in six African nations—Congo, Ghana, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe—were taking action to improve their national and regional STI policies, STI governance, and institutions for research and innovation in line with the Recommendation on Science and Scientific Researchers (RS|SR).

With the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) is providing funding for the initiative.

Speaking during the session, Dr. Mavis Akuffobea-Essilfie, Senior Research Scientist/Sociologist at CSIR-STEPRI and Project Team Member, said the training was anticipated to improve understanding of the STI M&E indicators framework so that the organizations may report on such indicators.

Presentations on Ghana's STI M&E Indicators Framework: Infrastructure, Ghana's STI M&E Indicators Framework: Organization and Institutions, and Ghana's STI M&E Indicators Framework: Human Resource Capacity were given.

Dr. Akuffobea-Essilfie urged the participants to utilize the indicators in their organizations to gauge the level of STI development there, assess how well they were doing in that regard, and build the capacities of their various sections.

"Now that you are aware of the indicators, we will be returning to collect data in the near future based on the indicators to analyze our STI ecosystem," stated Dr. Gordon Akon-Yamga, Head of the Commercialization and Information Division at CSIR-STEPRI. So, you (the participants) won't be unfamiliar with the indicators. Several of the signs can be used to gauge how well your organization is doing as a whole.

After the preparation was complete, participants urged that the M&E Framework be widely distributed to all pertinent organizations and STI system stakeholders. They also stressed the necessity for additional tools to track the improvement in the caliber of STI development.
